Five15Arts presents WENT WITH THE FLOW, a new series of painted photographs by member artist Dan Friedman.
At first glance, Friedman’s bright color palette and sun-drenched subjects are experienced as happy and familiar. Recalling his move to Phoenix in the 1960s, he “saw neighborhoods with green trees, green lawns, and a multitude of swimming pools…. We all just went with the flow of water into our pool and from our showerheads and sprinklers, unimpeded by thoughts of how it got there.”
Friedman’s painted aerial photos of neighborhoods dotted with backyard pools expose our choices and assumptions about water use and supply. His isolated and repeated images of flowing water are attractive to the eye, yet unsettling to think about. The “reality” of photographs is juxtaposed with the expressive application of color creating a dissonance that reminds us of our dependence upon a precious, finite resource.
