Solo Art Exhibit by Marie McCarty-"it's only skin cancer" held at Phoenix College

Building on personal narratives about pain, trauma and recovery, Marie McCarty’s exhibition, “it’s only skin cancer,” investigates the turmoil and loss that a late-stage cancer patient progresses through as they seek treatment. Figurative paintings infused with pink flesh, surgical wounds, hospital equipment, and tanning objects tell the graphic firsthand stories of a patient’s agony. Confrontational, raw, and often uncomfortable the paintings in “it’s only skin cancer” force one to contemplate all that is done to the cancer patient in the attempts to survive. In creating this body of self-portraits the artist has opened a dialogue inviting the viewer to better understand the impact that the sun can have on unprotected skin.
