About This Event

The artists of the Rocking S Art Ranch, an artist studio complex in central Phoenix, are exhibition new work from February through mid March! Join us for an opening reception on February 6th and check back for pop ups and performances and workshops! The exhibition features li rothrock, Lena Klett, Joan Baron, Gloria Martinez Granados, Erika Lynne Hanson, Christina Messeti, Jen Urso, Sarah Martiny, Kaori Takamura, La Morena, Patricia Sannit, Jan Talmadge Davids, Annie Obrechta, Max Meyers, Judith Amiel and Steve Kaye.

Joan Baron

artist

Joan Baron is an environmental artist with emphasis on her social practice. Her leadership as educator and innovative community activist has delivered positive growth evident in youth behavior and adult awareness. Her many interviews and awards acknowledge her collaborative spirit. All her multi-dimensional exhibitions are immersive and experiential. Baron’s work addresses our collective role in the Anthropocene Epoch. Her works speak to and honor her continued deep study of the fundamental knowing that we are Earth beings…ethically responsible for the wellbeing of all lives.

Patricia Sannit

artist

Patricia Sannit is known for her work in ceramics, sculpture, multi-media work, and community projects. Her work explores human interactions, and her interactions, with the natural world and beyond. A significant area of study has been human evolution and our species’ resilience through time, and the power and persistence of migration as an adaptive strategy. Sannit is currently working on a series of environmental insertions and community-based performances inspired by 19th century biologist Jakob von Uexküll’s concept of "Umwelt, a description of the phenomenological world which an organism inhabits. Sannit’s site-responsive multimedia sculptural installations allow for expanded perception of nature. She received her MFA from California College of Arts. Awards include the Scult Contemporary Forum Artist Award and the Arizona Art Commission artist award. Residencies include the Archie Bray, Belger Crane Yard, Tempe Center for the Arts, Jentel Foundation, the Woodman Foundation, and the MacDowell Foundation. Solo shows include the ASU Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum and the Mulvane Museum.

Sarah Martiny

As an environmental scientist, my work is inspired by close observation of the natural world and a spirit of creative curiosity. My work aims to remind us of our place in the world, our interdependence with nature, and our singular ability to protect it. Building from the historical use of cyanotypes to document plants for botany, I forage for flowers while hiking in Arizona’s unique landscapes. Selecting plants, pressing, composing, and watching the sun make magic with them is a meditation on nature. During this entirely analogue process, the potential for variable outcomes means that no two pieces will ever be the same. The angle of the sun, the stroke of the brush, the shape and placement of the flowers create a myriad of possibilities. Botanical monotypes capture the spirit of a plant separate from its environment. Sometimes a series of prints can be made from the same plant, but often the plants disintegrate in the process, making each piece one of a kind. Like a specimen preserved for science, the print may remain with us longer than a fragile ecosystem.

li rothrock is a Phoenix-based artist whose work investigates inheritance, migration, and diaspora. Recent exhibitions include the shape of an absence, Eric Fischl Gallery, Phoenix, AZ, 2024; An Inheritance of Memories, Redeemer University, Hamilton, ON, Canada, 2022; and ¿Te Ubicas?, The Arts + Literature Laboratory, Madison, WI, 2021. Her work has appeared in Glamour Magazine, Vice News and Al Jazeera. She is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate at Arizona State University.
