My Southwest View: Art Juxtaposing Iconic Pop Culture with Arizona Scenery

The opening reception for Isadora Hale's new collection "My Southwest View" will be from noon to 4:00 at DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun's Little Gallery on Sunday, December 1st. The show will run through December 13th. This collection juxtaposes iconic pop culture elements with Arizona scenery and is a bold and colorful collection of new contemporary paintings with an often surreal and humorous twist, adding lightness and fun to art that has a more complex meaning for those who choose to look deeper. The DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun is a 10-acre National Historic District located in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains in Tucson. Designed and built by acclaimed Arizona artist Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia, the Gallery in the Sun has six permanent collections of paintings that trace historical events and native cultures of the Southwest. Rotating exhibitions display some of the 15,000 DeGrazia originals housed at the Gallery. The "Little Gallery" where this exhibition will be housed hosts just a handful of selected artists each year to exhibit their work in the original DeGrazia gallery, now known as the Little Gallery, which Ted DeGrazia built in the 1940's to exhibit his work. DeGrazia Gallery has since expanded to the larger adobe gallery which now houses his permanent collections, but this original historic gallery continues to host guests artists in the beautiful foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Isadora Hale is a Tucson, Arizona-based artist working primarily in acrylics on canvas. She grew up in the Bay Area, where she started her career doing graphic design for advertising agencies. While this may seem several steps away from fine art, she feels that the attention to detail, bold use of color, visual storytelling, and crisp, clean aesthetic that are evident in her paintings can be credited to those years spent creating ads, brochures, logos, packaging and websites. As a whole, her art encourages people to see their surroundings not just as a moment in time, but as something affected by their specific life experiences. This mind’s eye perspective makes image perception a bit fluid, which in turn allows her paintings to blur the lines of reality. Appreciating how diverse experiences can affect perception creates empathy and understanding, and she hopes to encourage this through her art. She paints with an often surreal and humorous twist, adding lightness and fun to art that has a more complex meaning for those who choose to look deeper. In 2023 she received the Arizona Commission on the Arts Research & Development Grant, with which she created a collection for her first major solo show titled “My Southwest View”. She also received the Carmody Foundation Art for Good Grant in 2024, was short listed for the 2025 Nice Art Grant, was a Spotlight Artist at Artlink’s 2025 Art d-Core Gala, and received the 2025 Arts Foundation of Tucson and Southern Arizona stART Grant.
