Michael Hewlett

About

Michael Hewlett is a Phoenix-based contemporary artist and founder of Yatzi Studio & Gallery. His original acrylic and mixed-media paintings explore Tranquility Interrupted—the moment beauty, stillness, or familiarity is disrupted by unexpected movement, tension, or force. Through atmospheric color, dramatic contrasts, expressive textures, and subtle whimsy, his paintings invite viewers to discover meaning beyond the familiar. His work moves between expressive abstraction and imaginative surrealism. His evolving Goldfish Series places brilliantly colored goldfish within unexpected Sonoran Desert settings, exploring vulnerability, resilience, and the delicate balance between security and uncertainty. These compositions blend playful imagery with deeper emotional narratives, creating moments of both wonder and reflection. Hewlett’s paintings have been exhibited at Portland on the Park and Alwun House in Phoenix. His work is also represented online through Xanadu Gallery ArtBoost and Yatzi Studio & Gallery. He is a member of the International Association of Art – USA (IAA/USA), affiliated with AIAP-UNESCO. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Hewlett discovered painting after a successful career in business leadership. His artistic approach combines thoughtful composition with intuition, experimentation, and an appreciation for imperfection. Each original Yatzi painting is professionally framed and accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity. Perfection is an illusion. Authenticity is art.
