About

Jalila grew up in a home overflowing with creativity, surrounded by the love of books, art, and food. From her earliest years, she found joy in expressing herself through color, movement, and imagination. Studying art at the Intercity Cultural Center in Los Angeles, her original paintings have always come from the heart and soul, reflecting her multicultural upbringing and diverse life experiences. Her work is a vibrant blend of jazz, dance, Black love, geekdom, and beauty. With a cultural heritage rooted in Irish, Native American, and African descent, Jalila’s art carries deep stories of ancestry and identity. In high school, her instructor Burdell Moody planted seeds of confidence that pushed her to branch out, eventually continuing her art education in college. Since then, her work has been showcased throughout the valley—from Phoenix’s First Fridays to galleries, bookstores, restaurants, and coffeehouses. She also teaches summer art classes and hosts traveling “sip and paint” workshops, sharing her creativity in joyful and accessible ways. Jalila was recently named the 2026 Phoenix Magazine's Readers Choice Best Artist. Never content to stay within one form, Jalila is constantly exploring new techniques to expand her artistic voice. Recently, she has been incorporating clay onto canvas, merging painting with sculptural texture to create works that feel alive, dimensional, and deeply tactile. In addition to painting, she wood burns, makes rag dolls, and pours her heritage of culture, family, and music into every piece.
